We had the pleasure to meet Yu Pui in Hong Kong in 1993. It seemed as if we had known him for years. Our good friend, Mizukami Yu Lai Yin, frequently spoke lovingly of her father and mentor. Yu Pui immediately came across as a person of strong will with a big heart.
Yu Pui later visited us in Honolulu over Chinese New Year. Nothing would ever replace the beauty of his beloved Huang Shan. His pilgrimages over the years to visit these enchanting yellow mountains in China’s Anhui Province were his fondest memories. Nevertheless, Yu Pui was immediately stimulated by the splendor of the Hawaiian Islands.
Yu Pui’s drawing pad accompanied him everywhere from morning until night. He frequently wanted to stop in order to sketch the scenery. Hours were spent admiring the beauty of the Diamond Head Lighthouse. A boat trip off the Honolulu shoreline further aroused his artist’s instincts. Yu Pui was excited and he shared this enthusiasm with everyone around him.
We will cherish Yu Pui’s keen eye end warm heart. It has been our good fortune to know him and share Yu Pui’s view of the world, both through his personal observations and from his paintings and seals.
